Determination of Method Uncertainty a Practical Example for the Analysis of Trihalomethanes in Drinking Water Using Purge&trap Gc-ms

چکیده
Johannesburg water is responsible for the supply and monitoring of drinking water supplied to the greater Johannesburg area. Part of this monitoring programme involves the determination of Trihalomethane (THM) levels and the comparison thereof against the limits stipulated in SANS 241. This paper demonstrates the approach used to determine the uncertainty of the analytical method associated with the determination of THM’s, at ug/L levels, in drinking water using Purge and Trap (P&T) GC-MS. It indicates the five steps used namely: 1. Specification of the method 2. Identifying the model 3. Identification of sources of uncertainty using the Ishikawa approach 4. Expanding and if needed combining the uncertainties of each of the chosen data sources 5. Combining the expanded uncertainties and expressing the final method uncertainty The paper also attempts an evaluation of the data obtained and recommends possible improvements, identified from the data obtained, which could be implemented to improve the uncertainty of the analytical method.

Comparison of two validated gas-chromatographic methods for the determination of trihalomethanes in drinking water
In this paper the results obtained using two validated gaschromatographic procedures on drinking water for the determination of trihalomethanes are compared. The volatile compounds, chloroform (CF), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM) and bromoform (BF) were detected by purge and trap capillary column gas-chromatography with electrolytic conductivity detector ( ELCD) and th...
متن کاملPurge and Trap GC-MS Determination of Trace Volatile Compounds in Drinking Water Using the HP 5973 Series MSD and Volatiles Interface (5965-8105E)
A system of purge and trap (P&T), gas chromatography (GC), and mass spectrometry (MS) was used to determine 84 volatile organic compounds at the ppt (parts per trillion) level targeted by EPA method 524.2. This was accomplished without the use of cryofocusing. The optimized system consisted of an HP 7695 P&T concentrator and autosampler; an HP 6890 Series GC with a volatiles interface (VI); a w...
متن کاملTrace-level determination of 1,4-dioxane in water by isotopic dilution GC and GC-MS.
The volatile and polar solvent 1,4-dioxane has recently been reported as a contaminant of ground and surface waters, establishing the need to determine this substance in drinking water. This investigation established that 1,4-dioxane can be determined in water by various techniques including direct aqueous injection (DAI) gas chromatography (GC) and purge and trap GC-mass spectrometry (MS). Pur...
متن کاملTechniques for Optimizing the Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds in Water Using Purge-and-Trap/GC/MS Application
The analysis of volatile organic compounds in water is normally accomplished by purge-and-trap/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. U.S. EPA Method 8260B with purge and trap sample introduction is widely used for the analysis of aqueous samples other than drinking water. This application note discusses problems that can arise and some easy solutions for them. These techniques have resulted in ...
